Quality Control in Clothing Manufacturing: A Complete Checklist

By Sanchuan Apparel | March 20, 2026 | 12 min read

Why Quality Control Matters

Quality control protects your brand reputation and prevents costly returns. A single defective product can damage customer trust, while systematic QC ensures consistent quality across thousands of units.

✅ QC Best Practices

Four Stages of Quality Control

🔴 Stage 1: Pre-Production Inspection (PPI)

When: Before bulk production begins

Purpose: Verify materials, components, and processes

🟡 Stage 2: During Production Inspection (DPI)

When: 10-30% production complete

Purpose: Catch issues early

🔴 Stage 3: Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI)

When: 80-100% production, before shipping

Purpose: Final random sampling

🟢 Stage 4: Loading Supervision

When: During loading into containers

Purpose: Ensure correct goods loaded

Understanding AQL Standards

📚 What is AQL?

AQL (Acceptable Quality Level) is the worst tolerable quality level. AQL 2.5 means you accept up to 2.5% defective items as "normal."

FAQ

What is AQL in clothing manufacturing?

AQL (Acceptable Quality Level) is a statistical standard for quality inspections. For clothing, standard AQL is 2.5 for major defects and 4.0 for minor defects. This means: for major defects, no more than 2.5% of items can fail; for minor defects, up to 4% can fail. Most brands use AQL 2.5 as the standard.

What are the stages of quality control?

QC has 4 main stages: 1) Pre-production inspection (fabric, materials), 2) During production inspection (DPI) - when 10-20% complete, 3) Pre-shipment inspection (PSI) - final random sampling, 4) Loading supervision - checking packed containers. Each stage catches different issues at different cost points.

What are common clothing defects?

Clothing defects are categorized: Critical (unacceptable): broken zipper, missing parts. Major: color mismatch, wrong size, open seams, staining. Minor: loose threads, small imperfections, minor measurement deviations. Any critical defect fails the entire lot. Major defects typically allow max 2.5% (AQL 2.5). Minor defects max 4%.
